New UTV Licensing procedures approved by City Council

The City of Tonganoxie City Council approved updates to the City's UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) licensing procedures on February 17, 2026. The licensing period will now extend from July 1st to June 30 of the following year. Renewals of existing licenses in 2026 will not take place in May but instead will be due on or before July, 1, 2026. All licensed UTVs will still need to schedule an inspection in June 2026 with the Police Department to insure the UTV maintains compliance with City Code requirements. Please call the Police Department at 913-369-3754 to set up your inspection. Once the inspection is completed, the $200 licensing permit fee can be paid at City Hall with cash or card. UTVs are required to be insured. Please bring along with you a copy of your current proof of insurance in order to complete your UTV registration.

The City Council also approved a pro-rated fee structure for new UTV license applications according to the following schedule: 

  • April 1 – June 30 (grace period): UTV New Registrations charged full fees. The license provided covers up to 15 months (until the following year’s renewal date).
  • July 1 – December 31: UTV New Registrations charged full fees with no pro-ration. Registration remains effective until July 1.
  • January 1 – March 31: UTV New Registrations charged pro-rated license fee of ½ of the current annual fee. Registration remains effective until July 1.
