City Council

The City Council provides policy direction on behalf of the citizens of Tonganoxie through ordinances and resolutions. In addition, the City Council engages the community through committees, citizen advisory boards, and commissions. The five-member City Council and the Mayor, referred to collectively as the City's Governing Body, are elected at large for staggered terms of four years. The Governing Body holds regular meetings on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month.

Written comments for a regular City Council meeting may be submitted in advance until 1:00 PM on the day of the regular public meeting and will be distributed to the City Council.  Public comment during a regular City Council meeting will be limited to a time period of 3 minutes per person, and each commenter needs to contact the City Clerk at (913) 845-2620 or by email by 1:00 PM on the day of the regular City Council meeting to sign up for addressing the City Council at the meeting.  While the public is encouraged to submit comments in advance, meetings that include any agenda items titled "public hearings" will also include opportunities for public comments during the hearing which is part of the meeting. Commenters should be prepared to provide their first & last name and address to the Governing Body before making comments. The City reserves the right to discontinue a meeting if any improper behavior occurs which prevents the uninterrupted conduct of business.

The City of Tonganoxie YouTube channel is used to broadcast live streams of regular City Council meetings. There may be a delay between the end of a meeting and the publication of a meeting recording online while the recording is uploaded on the City of Tonganoxie YouTube channel.

The agenda packet for regular City Council meetings will be posted on the City website prior to the meeting.
