Council-Manager Form of Government

In 2013 Tonganoxie exceeded 5000 residents, and for this status Tonganoxie was promoted to a city of the 2nd class.  On July 9, 2013, Governor Sam Brownback signed a proclamation celebrating this development.  From left to right are Councilmember Bill Peak, Councilmember Jim Truesdell, Governor Sam Brownback, City Manager Nathan McCommon, and Assistant City Manager Jennifer Jones-Lacy.

Tonganoxie has a modified version of a council-manager form of government. The mayor and five council members are elected at-large and serve four-year terms. The mayor recommends, and the city council confirms, annual appointments of the municipal judge, city attorney, city clerk, and city treasurer.

The city manager has the superintending authority over municipal operations and  serves at the pleasure of the city council.  The city manager also prepares the annual budget for approval by the city council.
