Disconnection of Water Utility Service for Non-payment - Procedures Adjustment Notice
Effective on March 31, 2025 the City of Tonganoxie utilities division will not be available to restore disconnected water service after normal business hours on the shut-off date for non-payment of utility bills.
As a reminder of the City utilities' billing and notification procedures - utility bills are first mailed or emailed to each account's address of record the first business day of each month and are considered due by 4:30 p.m. on the 15th day of the month. After that time a 10% penalty is applied to the balance due. Shut-off for non-payment notices, or late notices, are mailed or emailed to the account address of record for delinquent accounts on the next business day following the 15th of every month and act as a second notification of the amount due. This notice includes a reference to the date the water service will be shut-off if the bill remains unpaid. In addition, the City provides am optional third notice of payment due in the form of a courtesy phone call reminder extended to delinquent accounts which provide telephone contact information to the City.
Shut-off date occurs at 1:00pm on the second-to-last business day of the calendar month. At the time of disconnection of water service for non-payment the property is posted with a physical notice. This notice advises of the disconnection of service and provides information about how to make payment and restore service. If the original shut-off date falls on a holiday observed by the City, the water service disconnection for non-payment will occur on the next business day. If the shut-off date falls on a Friday, the water service disconnection for non-payment will occur on the following Monday at 1:00pm. On and following the water service disconnection for non-payment, in addition to the regular bill and 10% penalty, the service re-connection fee applied to the amount due is $30. No re-connection of water service is available after regular business hours (8:00 AM - 4:30 PM) on the shut-off date.
