Purpose: The City of Tonganoxie seeks to: (1) enhance resident knowledge of city operations and services, (2) recruit informed and engaged residents to serve on city boards and commissions, (3) encourage a unified community identity, (4) increase participation in city events and meetings.

Description: Tonganoxie residents recognize this community is a great place to work, live and raise a family. Crime is low in Tonganoxie as we are one of the top safest cities named by Safewise, the school system is vibrant, access is quick to both urban and natural amenities, the air is clean, and the environmental scenery is captivating. The Tonganoxie Civic Academy (TCA) allows opportunities for community-minded individuals to discover what makes our high quality of life possible through behind the scene tours, hands-on activities, and conversations with city staff. Come visit with council members, explore the city budget, tour the fire department and ride-along with a cop! Upon completion, graduates will receive a certificate denoting their time with a ceremony party at the end of the session.

Dates: The Spring 2018 program will take place on the last Wednesday of each month. The sessions typically run around 2 to 3 hours with tours of facilities and lessons pertaining to the topic of the session at hand.

Who May Apply: Any resident of Tonganoxie, Kansas age 18 or over.

How to Apply: The Civic Academy online application remains available for completion on an on-going basis. Deadline to apply for the Spring Academy is February 9th, 2018. Please click the Apply for the Tonganoxie Civic Academy (TCA) link to submit the online application. Apply today!

Selection: All applications submitted before the deadline will be considered for selection in the upcoming academy. If you apply after the deadline for an academy, your application will be kept on file and included in the selection pool for the next academy session. The city will notify each participant after the deadline closes regarding their selection.

Application Status: Please feel free to contact Tonganoxie City Hall at (913)-845-2620 X1008 or email Elizabeth Andrews at to inquire about your application status and submit multiple applications if any information has changed.

Program Growth: At this time, the academy only supports 12 participants in each class. We strive to serve each resident who is interested in participating. We appreciate your patience as the program develops.

Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to understand the city’s responsibilities, have a refined sense of community in relation to local Tonganoxie pride and knowledge. The program has a total of 4 program sessions, on the last Wednesday evening of each month. Graduation from the program is the 5th session.

The program is free to all citizens, however, limited class sizes require an application process to gain acceptance. The sessions will vary week to week and will feature new lessons and separate departments to tour and learn from across the city like the City Hall, City Council, the Police Department, the Fire Department, and Public Works.
