Tonganoxie Civic Club Hosts Walk to Benefit Gallagher Park

Gallagher Park Concept

The Tonganoxie Civic Club is sponsoring a walk on October 4th to support the construction of Gallagher Park located at 301 S. Main Street. The property was donated to the City by the Gallagher family so that it could be built into a park for the benefit of the community.

"We think the Gallagher Park will be a tremendous asset to Tonganoxie citizens," said Jason Ward, Mayor and President of the Civic Club. "This walk is one way the Civic Club and members of the community can show their support and help us build this tract of land into a park that greatly enhance our community and downtown."

The future park will include a trail head for Chieftain Trail, a picnic shelter, a playground, benches, information kiosk and a water fountain encircled by a brick pathway providing additional seating and an esthetic element.

"Our goal in designing this park was to find something that would serve all citizens," said Kay Soetaert, Chair of the Gallagher Park Task Force. "With the park's proximity to the water park, Chieftain Trail, and downtown, the property has the potential to see a lot of use and fill a need in Tonganoxie."

The Gallagher Park Task Force recently received a Sunflower Trails Grant that will help fund beginning of the park by installing an information kiosk that will include trail maps, local historical information, community events and information on health and fitness. The grant will also fund mileage marker signs along Chieftain Trail.

Those wishing to participate will meet at Gallagher Park and walk from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m. on October 4th. The walk will go to Chieftain Park, VFW Park to Laming and Woodfield Drive. Walkers are collecting pledges to sponsor their walk and benefit the park.
