SEPTEMBER 3, 2014 – The Chieftain Trail will soon see some enhancements including mile marker signs and an information kiosk thanks to a grant from the Sunflower Foundation. The information kiosk will include trail maps, local history, information on healthy living, and local events. The kiosk will be located in the newly named Gallagher Park located at the corner of Main and 3rd Streets, south of the Tonganoxie Water Park.

Crews completed Phase II of the Chieftain Trail in May 2014 creating approximately 1.8 miles of trail beginning at 4th and Main Streets. The trail also connects to other trails located in Chieftain and VFW Parks providing nearly 3 miles of interconnected trails through town.

“Tonganoxie is setting an example for trail creation and enhancement in Leavenworth County,” said Kevin Otterman, Chair of the Leavenworth County Port Authority's Trails Committee. “Chieftain Trail and the trails being expanded in the VFW Park really show the community leadership cares about the health and well being of its residents”.

The Sunflower Foundation Grant will cover 50% of the cost of the mileage marker signs and information kiosk. The Gallagher Park Task Force is assisting with fundraising for the remaining 50%. Those interested in making a contribution may do so online at www.tonganoxie.org.  All donations are fully tax deductible.
