3/4 Cent Sales Tax Mail Ballot Election to Take Place in February

Posted by jshockley at Dec 20, 2016 11:20 AM |

The Tonganoxie City Council is asking voters to weigh in on whether the city's current 3/4 cent sales tax, which was used to pay for the Tonganoxie Water Park, should be replaced with a new 3/4 cent sales tax. The new 3/4 cent sales tax is proposed to go into effect on October 1, 2017 and be used to build a new library and to maintain and improve city infrastructure, including bridges, streets, stormwater, and utilities. The proposed sales tax would not increase the sales tax rate in Tonganoxie - it would replace an existing tax that expires in September of 2017.

Ballots will be mailed to all residents registered to vote by the Leavenworth County Clerk on February 8, 2017. The deadline to register to vote for this election is January 27, 2017. All ballots must be returned to the County Clerk's Office by 12:00 p.m. on February 28. They can be mailed in the pre-paid envelope that is delivered with the ballot, dropped off at the ballot box in front of the Leavenworth County Annex in Tonganoxie, or delivered to the County Clerk's Office at 300 Walnut Street in Leavenworth.

The City will be hosting two informational meetings for citizens to come and learn more about the proposed sales tax. These meetings will be on January 25, 2017 and February 7, 2017, both at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 321 S. Delaware Street.
